The bride's mother (or the groom's) is the second most important woman at the wedding, and her look should be elegant, comfortable and cut exactly to her figure. The same principles hold for a milestone birthday. Here is how to choose the dress.

## What matters in the mother of the bride's look

- **Dignity without rivalry** - dressed up, but never brighter than the bride; white is out.
- **Comfort for the whole day** - the ceremony, the dinner, the dancing; the fabric breathes, the cut does not restrict.
- **A fit that follows your figure** - after 45 or 50, off-the-peg size charts are especially often not about you: this is the strongest argument for making the dress to measure.

## Silhouettes that work

- **A-line and straight cuts** - universal, and they soften the waist and hips gently.
- **A dress with sleeves or a cape** - covers the arms and saves you when it turns cool.
